Engagement photo season is fast approaching so I thought I’d share some thoughts and tips on how to get the most out of you engagement photo shoot.

There are lots of different reasons why people want engagement portraits.  Some couples want to get practice in front of the camera.  Others want prints to display at the wedding.  Some people want nice images to use for their save-the-dates, sign in books, gift prints or art prints for your walls.

Planning an engagement photo shoot is just like planning any type of portrait session – with a few special considerations (for example, the timing of your session before the wedding).  So these tips are also relevant for anyone looking to plan a bridal session, a family portrait session or a children’s session.

Shot List: With engagement photos particularly, planning ahead is important in case you want anything ready in time for the wedding.  Let me know if there are any specific shoots you would like me to capture for you.

Do you want a single stand-alone image to print?  Do you want a collection of prints? Are you looking to make a book? Would you rather have one or a few handmade prints? Do any of these need to be ready in time for your wedding?

Concept and Location: The most successful sessions have the simplest concepts.  Choose somewhere meaningful, like where you had your first date, or re-create your proposal, or take photographs at local park or beach.  Choose something you love doing together!

If in doubt, let me know what appeals to you. Farms? Parks? Cityscapes? Nature?  I’ll help to find the right place.

Time: There are a few times of day that are generally excellent for photography: early in the morning, during that last golden hour before sunset, and, in some locations— like urban locations with lots of lights—just after sunset when the sky is a deepening blue.

Wardrobe / Look: Be comfortable. Again, let what you wear reflect your personality! Don’t be afraid to wear bright colors, or wear all black. Whatever suits you as a couple.

Above all, Engagement shoots are about YOU, your love, your relationship. So relax, have fun and I can capture some wonderful memories!
